— Cedar Lake Chalet

With a sudden infestation of fruit flyesque bugs, I traced them back to a spot in the ceiling of our master bedroom. This particular spot had prior water damage, however I had been hoping that the problem had been repaired. As it turns out, the majority of the plywood substrate is rotted out in the ceiling.

awesome

Directly above our bedroom is a deck. A deck that has seen better days. I started pulling off the decking to inspect what was going on, and as I had guessed there was a repair in the rubber membrane underneath. It doesn’t appear to a major leak of any kind, however there is condensation up in the ceiling so it looks like we’ve found our next project. I think we’ll kick this off in a couple weeks.

Want a new deck? No? Too bad.

With the flooring woes behind us, work has continued on the nursery. The next task at hand is to update the closet so it can accommodate a baby girl, who if lucky enough, will be living in this room into her early teens.

A long shelf and hanging rod. Not what we need.

The original closet was nothing more then a long shelf with a hanging rod. For our needs, we needed multiple storage compartments with multiple hanging rods while keeping it contemporary. There are all sorts of videos on the web on how to build closet storage, such as this one from This Old House that can provide you with enough knowledge to get by on your own. You can get as crazy as you want with materials. In our case, we’re utilizing Ikea for the door fronts and we’re snagging the framing material from Menards.

In addition to the closet renovation, we acquired the pendant lamp we looked high and low far to compliment the new color of the room. We picked it up online from Pottery Barn Kids, who can stick it up their rear for charging way to much for shipping and handling… nearly 20% of the price! On top of that, they state no where that the lamp is NOT a ceiling fixture, which means you have to turn it into one your self.

Lovely

With the chimney removal came some additional work. And by additional work, I mean black mold.

Yummy

Turns out they didn’t exactly do a bang up job when installing the chimney which led to a major leak in one of the bedrooms. We like to call this bedroom “the nursery”. So what do you do with black mold underneath the carpet? Well, the first thing to keep in mind with mold is that it grows when it’s wet. The previous owners obviously knew about the leak, which they proceeded to fix some time ago. This kept the mold from getting out of control. From their, the second step is to get rid of the carpet and padding and spray the mold down with bleach, alcohol or witch’s blood.

Removal of the nasty particle board substrate

Once you’ve removed the old flooring, it’s not a bad idea to go over the floor with a coat of Killz.

Get a nice think coat on that floor and get ready to start sawing.

As we began work on the loft area, I purposely ignored working on the media wall as I poured over numerous ideas on how to design it. Aside from spending thousands to build the entire area out, I wanted to figure out a way to continuing utilizing the existing shelves which I had redone. I also wanted to keep the area simple and minimal while hiding all cords and distractions from any equipment.

The shelves prior to room dismantling

Once the shelves were done being refinished, I was aware that we would probably be cutting them up making room for a TV . However, it felt a bit stale cutting the center of the shelves out and placing a big tv in the center. On top of that, it was lacking the type of design aesthetic I wanted. So as I stood on the other side of the room, I decided I would flip the shelves up, so the large flat portions were against the wall. And that was it. Flipping four of the shelves upwards gave me 4, 16″X12″X1″ wide wood panels running the span of the wall. And to add depth, why not pull the panels out a couple inches from the wall.

Pops and I figuring out how to mount the shelves vertically. Notice the new outlet in the center.

So after a bit of wheeling and dealing, I convinced Pops that this would look pretty sweet. We picked up eight, 2X6′s and ran them behind the panels to give them the depth and dimension we were looking for. We also ran power up the wall, putting a 4 outlet box directly behind where the TV would be mounted.

Four of the panels up, with the outlet cut out in the middle.

We decided we would leave the 5th shelf as is so it could serve as a separator, as well as a continual header shelf. It’s 10ft high and will serve well for some of our artwork and books.

Finally, he's home.

After sitting against a wall for 3 months, the TV finally found it’s home. All of the cords will be hidden behind the panels and glass shelving will be put on the sides which will house other TV equipment, artwork, books and dust.

Major progress has been made in the kitchen area. The counter top, sink and appliances have all been installed. What remains after the tiling, is the top cabinets along with the door and sink hardware.

Before the tile was put in

We picked a Grohe Eurostyle kitchen faucet off of craigslist. We dig how the spout and lever are side by side separate.

Progress continued over the weekend as we finished tiling the kitchen back splash.  We found a great deal on some beautiful 1X1 glass tile that should work well with the light palette of the room.

Ice Tile

You can drive your self crazy making sure tile of this size aligns properly. Using a level and putting your eye up close on the side helps keep things in order.

Unfortunately we undershot our original measurement and ended up having to cut slivers which resulted in the following.

With the shelves being completely sanded and white washed, I’ve moved into Polyurethane mode. The fumes are thick and they’ve found me half naked, rolling around in snow banks at the end of the block around 7pm for the last few days. Reminds me of college.

For this you'll pay a terrible price

In other news, the new counter top has arrived! It’s a 12ft butcher block just aching for some sanding.

These shelves are taking forever to finish, but it’s worth it (I think). The metal rod system is just too cool to not re-use, however we want the color of the wood to match the rest of the room. Could we have just painted the shelves? Of course, but that would have been too easy.

The shelves prior to room dismantling

It took about 10 hours of sanding to get the surfaces to a respectable point. I went through over a dozen sand belts. I had to be extra careful not to sand through the laminate.
