As we began work on the loft area, I purposely ignored working on the media wall as I poured over numerous ideas on how to design it. Aside from spending thousands to build the entire area out, I wanted to figure out a way to continuing utilizing the existing shelves which I had redone. I also wanted to keep the area simple and minimal while hiding all cords and distractions from any equipment.

The shelves prior to room dismantling
Once the shelves were done being refinished, I was aware that we would probably be cutting them up making room for a TV . However, it felt a bit stale cutting the center of the shelves out and placing a big tv in the center. On top of that, it was lacking the type of design aesthetic I wanted. So as I stood on the other side of the room, I decided I would flip the shelves up, so the large flat portions were against the wall. And that was it. Flipping four of the shelves upwards gave me 4, 16″X12″X1″ wide wood panels running the span of the wall. And to add depth, why not pull the panels out a couple inches from the wall.

Pops and I figuring out how to mount the shelves vertically. Notice the new outlet in the center.
So after a bit of wheeling and dealing, I convinced Pops that this would look pretty sweet. We picked up eight, 2X6′s and ran them behind the panels to give them the depth and dimension we were looking for. We also ran power up the wall, putting a 4 outlet box directly behind where the TV would be mounted.

Four of the panels up, with the outlet cut out in the middle.
We decided we would leave the 5th shelf as is so it could serve as a separator, as well as a continual header shelf. It’s 10ft high and will serve well for some of our artwork and books.

Finally, he's home.
After sitting against a wall for 3 months, the TV finally found it’s home. All of the cords will be hidden behind the panels and glass shelving will be put on the sides which will house other TV equipment, artwork, books and dust.
